START OFF THE NEW YEAR WITH A CLEAN PC

by clearing out your temporary files and defragmenting your hard drive.

How to Delete temporary files

Whenever you access web sites on the Internet, cookies (small information files) and other files are written to a folder located at C:\Windows\Temporary Internet Files.

The quickest way to delete these files in from Internet Explorer.

  1. In Internet Explorer click Tools, then click 'Internet Options'.

  2. Select the 'General' tab and find the 'Temporary Files' section half way down the page.

  3. Click the 'Delete Files' button and in the window that opens, check the box for 'Delete all offline content'.

  4. Click OK and all the files are erased.

The quickest way to delete these files in from Netscape.

  1. Start Netscape

  2. Select 'Edit', then 'Preferences' from the bottom of the drop down list.

  3. In the "Category" column click on the "+" in front of 'Advanced'. A "-" will appear and a list will expand under 'Advanced'

  4. Choose 'Cache'

  5. On the menu at the right click on 'Clear Memory Cache' and then click on 'Clear Disk Cache'

Defragment your hard drive

A heavily fragmented drive can slow down your PC. Running this maintenance task helps keep your PC running at top speed. This process can take a long time, so it is best to run this routine at the end of the day.

  1. Go to the desktop and double-click 'My Computer'.

  2. Right click the drive you want to defragment, (C:) in most cases.

  3. In the drop down menu that appears, click 'Properties'.

  4. Click the 'Tools' Tab in the dialog box that appears.

  5. In the Tools section, select 'Defragment Now' and defragmentation begins.
